View Full Version : Component video splitting

What can be done to split an RGB component connection to two locations? Will simple "y" adaptors work if only one set of connections is used at a time? I have a customer who wants a plasma in his game room, and an addtional mount above an outdoor fireplace. The outdoor would be used seldomly, hence not supplying a more weather friendly application say with a crt monitor.

Thanks,
Mike

Can you say distribution amp?

What kind of wire is in the walls right now?

What I am about to tell you may be considered heresy and it would be justifyable to burn me at the stake for it... But a cheap and easy fix for this is the Muxlab stereo Balun. It allows a single composite and 2 baseband audio channels to be sent down a cat5. Use the composite out from the amp and y the audio, and your done. Its a cheap and easy fix if he doesnt mind the downgraded picture.
Retail is about 150 bucks for the balun, throw in a couple composite interconnect and your time.

Be nice now people...

Why, I can even say distribution amplifier. But this is a good friend (and customer) and I'd like to avoid the expense if simply splitting it will work.

Shadowman, currently 3 RG6Q, 1 cat5e, and one stereo live level. Good news is, I'm right in the middle of the prewire, so if changes need to be made, it's a good time.

y adaptors will not work.

This is absolutely the way to go IMHO. I've used them a couple of times now and they work flawlessly and are WAY less $ than a Key Digital or something.

It's not really a matrix switch, but rather and "splitter" sending up to 4 sources to 2 component locations.

Not a bad idea... Would this work, Take a couple of those zektors plug a Video Request and a 777 into them. Would this give you descent DVD video on 4 screens? (same video)
Use any touchscreen or IR remote and your laughing. Possibly thinking out loud here. should do some research before opening my mouth.

How exactly does the Key Digital 8X6 work??
On their web site it looks like Y-adapters to me.

I think it is y's. Wouldnt a buffered loop output work better?

Shadowman, see the BVH-20 about half way down the page: http://www.audiocontrol.com/multi_room.htm

One component input, cat5 to the tvs, then a BVR-20 at each TV. Even sends digital audio. Works like a dream and cat5 is a lot easier to pull than three RG6s.

If you want to use the RG6s in the wall, then use the KD-ADA4: http://www.keydigital.com/Itemdesc.asp?CartId={39CBD276-8982-45F4-96AE-3FFD9CEEVERESTBE43C}&ic=KDADA4&Tp=

or the KD-DA6: http://www.keydigital.com/Itemdesc.asp?CartId={39CBD276-8982-45F4-96AE-3FFD9CEEVERESTBE43C}&ic=KDDA6&Tp=

Either should work great for your application. Add an IR system for control from each location and you should be good to go.

CE labs sells a 1 in 4 out component video amplifier for about $85. Is this too much for the budget?

The CE labs 400 model says nothing about bandwidth.

but the 900 model says it has 50 Mhz

so does the 400 model struggle with HD transfer or had it worked good with HD for ya ????

Thanx - C Hyde

I've used the 400 with good results.

good post Brad, you nailed it. the degree of loss (+,- Db) is just as important as the range, and sometimes as you said "letting it rock" is simply because the client may never notice the performance difference, eventhough we can tell, and being a perfectionist (at least when it comes to A/V) in hate to leave a job less than "perfect".
