This would be pretty awesome to implement in any digitizing systems from manufacturers. Finally can get lossless audio in a format compatible with iDevices.

Isn't ALAC FLAC at its core. I mean "great artists steal."

Don't know. what I do know is FLAC doesn't play on any Apple devices which I've heard are popular for audio playback devices. I think those iPod/iTunes/iPhone things might be catching on

Well it's a 16-bit lossless format... but that does not mean it's stolen.
Besides, Bob Stuart from Meridian developed lossless multi-channel 24-bit codecs (like the MLP that was the heart of the DVD-Audio format) a couple years before FLAC was around.
And I am sure that this was an audio-centric variant on some other data compression system from before that...
