Doom For Voom

-- TWICE, 4/8/2005 6:55:00 AM

Abstract: Washington — The board of directors of Cablevision Systems confirmed last month’s decision to shut down its troubled Rainbow DBS subsidiary, and advised customers that its Voom satellite TV service will cease to be available on April 30.

Seems hard to comprehend another sat service making it in the first place. Who has the money to waste on these kind of gambles?

Sat is surely not going away, but now that cable is getting some HD it isn't such an ugly sister to sat as it's always been. If cable brings on more HD and can improve a little on it's grainy standard channels, there'd be less reason to mount a dish and go to all that trouble.

The funny part is, here in Cablevision land, that Cablevision itself has put on lots of HD, and improved services (Internet/VoIP), and is putting themselves (as VOOM) out of business. We used to do a few satellites a month (DTV, not VOOM). We've done maybe 1-2 this year...
