View Full Version : Power Bridge alternatives?

Hello everyone,

I recently saw some posts about a product called Power Bridge, which is a set of 2 electrical outlets which allow you to mount a TV on the wall, and still have the ability to have a surge protected source of power 4 or 5 feet up on the wall behind the flat panel TV.

Does anyone know if there is an alternative to this product ?

From the looks of it, it doesn't seems like there is any company out there selling a male pronged outlet ( which Power Bridge provides in their kits )

I'm debating this week, if I should just put out the money and get a PowerBridge kit and be done with it.

If you have any suggestions, I'd really like to hear them.

Thanks a bunch.

For $xx.xx Why not. I just installed one and it worked great. Easy to do. Your other option can be using a surge protector behind the plasma or use a Panamax (http://www.panamax.com/Products/In-Wall/MIW-POWERKIT-PRO.aspx) which I never been really happy about and they are more expensive.

Hello everyone,
I'm debating this week, if I should just put out the money and get a PowerBridge kit and be done with it.

The alternative is a kit from Panamax that costs $300 or to build your own from about $20 worth of parts and $100 worth of your time. If you get any special joy out of doing it yourself, then this might be interesting. There are some guys on here who know who to build one.

IMO, you are almost always better off by spending money that saves you time and then using that time to earn more money elsewhere. I figured out a long time ago how much my time is worth and have lived a much happier life because of it.

It's only $xx.xx. It seems important to you to do the job right, as evidenced by your desire to not just dangle the cord down the wall, so do it right. Buy the kit, install it, and smile.

Kind regards,
Justis

Maybe we could start a petition for Powerbridge to sell the Inlet only.... I am not buying the packaging argument.... send me the damn thing in a non-retail ready box, I don't care. The power cable it too short to be useful, either.

Perhaps this public plaint will be heard, and the wholseale pricing info will be drowned out.

I thought we were talking retail prices, but perhaps my memory of these items is off. I haven't priced either one in months.

Kind regards,
Justis

I for one would like to hear from this member / these members that have made their own.

I came across some interesting info this morning.

Take a look at this outlet, this, I'm positive will indeed work !, it's an outlet plug for an RV ( Mobile Home ), these plugs are used on the exterior wall of the RV and plug in to power at the camping site, via a regular electrical extension cord.

See here:

and here is another one:

Guy's, be aware that I moved this back into the public section since the original poster is not verified yet, so please keep the pricing retail.

Thanks.

This is exactly what we use. It is an inlet not an outlet. Then we use leviton's clock receptacle if going to a flat panel or a standard duplex outlet if we are doing something different.

You can get everything you need: inlet, outlet, romex, and power cable for the inlet for less than $50 reatail.

Exactly!

The only thing that makes that kit anything is the inlet. Im sure its just a matter of time until male to male cords are available for this purpose.

Male to Male cords will never be available. Think about the safety issues raised when you plug one end into a live outlet. What do you do with the other end? (other than bump it into something conductive, or touch it, or...)

Male to Male will never happen. & for anybody who has ever made there own i hope you get electrocuted by your own creation. (Yes I have seen pictures of them that people made. Hopefully it wasn't done by anybody who does installations for a living).

If you want inlets only pick up the leviton piece at your local electrical supply house. Model number is4937. It's only available in grey and it has a cover door on it but 99% of the time they are hidden from view anyways.

By the way, the power cable that comes with the Powerbridge is way too small to be useful for anything- not the in-wall piece but the cable meant to go from the rack/power conditioner to the inlet.

It seems that they need to keep their per-unit price up to make it worthwhile.... as they could provide just the part we need for a couple of dollars more in non-retail packaging.

Male to male cables would be dangerous and disturbing...although I did hear QQQ was testing a prototype.

That's good to know. Thanks for that info.

You can go to HomeDepot and pick up a good quality power etricial cable ( extension cord ) for use with air conditioners, for not a lot of money, and are very high quality.

I shouldnt post when I'm tired. You guys bring up a very good point on the safety issues of male to male cords.
I like the peice that Avophile posted a pic of in his earlier reply. I will look into the leviton and drink a cup of coffee now. Cheers

I have no problem admitting I have made a MALE-TO-Male plug for my generator to backfeed through my Hot tub outlet. I usually hold one end in my mouth while I plug the other end. Now you know how I got the lazy eye and the studder. :)

Seriously, These would not be for sale anywhere. But In an emergency, the cable serves a purpose for me. Like anything in Life, you take precautions if you want to survive.
