Folks,
I usually can talk clients into "full" speakers UPFRONT but in this case because of kids their parents want NOTHING within the reach of the "wee ones". So.......what has the community found to be the speakers of choice: in-walls for the front & in-ceiling for the surrounds & over the pool table. Any suggestions????? Thanks

I had the exact same request in a 5.1 theater a few weeks ago. We went with LCR in wall and in ceiling for the rear channels. They also wanted the equipment up high on the wall for the same reason but I talked them into a cabinet with a safety latch.

While I think some of these parents are a little over protective, I do have crayon on my Polk towers.

I've used a lot of Sonance S623TR in ceilings if on a budget (under $250 apiece) or the neater ones are the Ellipse 1.0 or Ellipse 2.0 that have the mid/tweet mounted at a 30 degree angle aimed to the seating position. $350-700 each. Those are all in-ceilings.

The in walls (budget) equivalent would be S623T or better, the Cinema series.

I have a client with a child who has downs syndrome among a number of other ailments. The little guy likes to pull the knobs/buttons off the front of electronic components (everything is now in a closet). In-ceiling HT speakers were chosen as the best option for the new family room for today as well as for when he grows taller.

James rocks! But I am doing a ton of TruAudio and the performance is similar for a lot less money.

Cut the power cord off a couple of really old Kenwoods or Pioneers and let him
have his fun. Poor Guy, you took his toys away. :)

Also, Give him all the Harmony remotes that you can find.

OK, I'll chime in my 2 cents on speakers. There's a little company in Canada called Angstrom. They have been making speaker for 31 years, and yes unlike Sonance and Speakercraft they MAKE there own speakers. Their biggest flaw is marketing, when it comes to that they suck.

I've been doing truAudio for 7+ years now and they rock. They have an excellent line for value pricing. For a basement media room/home theater I love the Revolve LCR's and surround in-ceiling speakers. The LCR's are 8" three ways flush mount to the ceiling canted back 15 degrees and the surrounds are also in-ceilings with a pivoting bar with two 1" tweeters. These are awesome for the money and keep everything in the ceiling out of the way. They also have a line of 6.5" 2 way and three way in-ceilings as well.

And the 8" Ghost Grills fit on them :)

TRIAD. Besides the top quality of their speakers they offer custom paint and veneer to match any decor. TRIAD rocks!

I haven't heard anything better in an outdoor speaker that has topped the Di8DC, and the 401dce's are great as well.

We are currently setting up a theater with the definition dc12is for the LCRs, 2 ds15i and their 500watt amp, 4 iw60efx, and 2 iw63dc, I havent heard them yet but I can't wait.

For this system, I would go with in-walls for the front and in-ceiling for the surround locations, if necessary (in-walls are still preferable from an acoustic perspective). Keeping the dialogue and other critical sounds down in the front of the theater closer to the listener's heads is so important for an involving experience. We as listeners are certainly capable of integrating ceiling sound with a front wall display, but we have to do more 'work'. As a result, the experience is not as effortless, natural and involving.

If the budget allows, the Sonance Cinema LCR1 in-wall speaker is an excellent choice for most multi-purpose rooms and reasonable playback volumes. For a matching in-ceiling surround model, the Cinema Ceiling SUR1S (Square) is a perfect compliment.

If you must go in the ceiling, the Cinema Ceiling LCR1S is a great performing speaker with the ability to project full sound 10-14 feet away, depending on ceiling height. Although its presentation is not as natural as its in-wall brother, it has a very similar acoustic perspective.

All the newer Sonance Cinema models use the same cast basket/carbon fiber composite drivers, silk dome tweeters, extruded AL outer frame, integral MDF baffle and enclosure, separate cross-over boards for the woofer and mid/tweeter section, etc. They were all designed by ToThe result is that they can be mixed and matched and maintain the same family sound and excellent performance.

Some of our dealers match our Cinema LCRs with our Original Series Medium or Large, diffuse-radiating in-ceiling surrounds such as the 623R SRS or VP85R Surround. These could be used with our Plastic Retrofit Enclosures or MDF Acoustic Enclosures for new construction for sound containment and higher power handling.

These newer Sonance Cinema speakers have been very popular and the dealers I have talked with are absolutely thrilled with their performance and value.
