The industry is growing again, and rapidly. EXPO 2014 showed increases in all statistics; attendance, exhibitors, training, everything. And seats to take CEDIA certification exams were SOLD OUT! This great news, right? Well, yes and no. This growth is presenting a challenge for virtually every integration company out there. Where to find people to hire to keep up with the size and number of projects. In fact, in one large class at EXPO our instructor asked the group how many of their companies are hiring. Out of the group of about 100, all but 3 raised their hands. Those three were one-man shops who have the same problem finding subcontractors. This is a very real problem. And CEDIA is working hard to meet the challenge head on. As you know CEDIA is a founder and supporter of the ESPA program (Electronic Systems Professional Alliance) which trains and certifies entry-level ESTs. This program is now starting to gain a good bit of traction and has been adopted in schools in about 15 markets. These students come into the job market with a solid fundamental understanding of low voltage wiring and good jobsite skills. Asking for the ESPA EST certification is a good way to pre-screen potential entry-level technicians. Even if there is no tech school nearby they can take an online course and then schedule the exam at a testing center (the same network that CEDIA uses). www.espa.org This year, CEDIA took a huge step toward training people even more thoroughly for the residential systems industry. The Fundamentals of Residential Electronic Systems book was launched, along with the new Gateway certification; both of which are very well suited for the academic channel, especially tech schools. This means a school can teach the ESPA material and then move up to more advanced content which is specific to the CEDIA Channel. This body of knowledge covers virtually all of our industry at a fundamental level. Meaning that a student who completes this work and passes the...
